One of the methods to study the earthquakes by using the recorded accelerations is to simulate the strong ground motion. The stochastic finite fault approach will aid in the development of ground-motion relations in data-poor regions. In this research, we identified the source parameters of the 20 December 2010 Rigan Earthquake using a ground-motion simulation based on a stochastic finite-fault model. The main shock of the 20 December 2010 Rigan Earthquake with magnitude MW = 6.7 (USGS), was recorded by 23 digital SSA-2 accelerograms. These stations were installed at epicentral distances ranging from 41 to 263 km. We estimated the causative rupture length and the downdip causative rupture width using the empirical relation from the best defined aftershock zone and the depth distribution of these aftershocks at 25.59 and 11.19 km, respectively. The fault plane was divided into 8×8 elements; it is based on the concept of self-similarity and revised scaling relations .The above method needs information related to attenuation, site characterization and frequency-dependent amplification as input, which are determined based on strong motion records, obtained during the main shock of 20 December 2010 Rigan Earthquake. In addition, the spectral decay parameter and the quality factor have been taken into account as other basic inputs for the mentioned method. The simulated results were compared with recorded ones on both frequency and time domains. The estimated strike and dip of the causative fault were 37 and 87, respectively. The rupture was propagated at (i,j) = (4,5) element, from Northeast to Southwest. The supposed stress drop was 60 bars. A quite satisfactory agreement was found between the simulated amplitude Fourier spectra and the recorded data at frequencies of engineering interest (0.5 to 20 Hz).

The delineation of the elastic, or velocity, structure of the Earth has long been a goal of the world's seismologists. For the first few decades of seismological research, the investigation on velocity structure was restricted to the determination of one-dimensional models of the solid Earth and of various regions within it. Seismologists are currently obtaining three dimensional velocity models and are working to resolve finer and finer features in the Earth. The knowledge of seismic velocity structure of the crust and the upper mantle is important for several reasons: these include accurate location of earthquakes, determination of the composition and origin of the outer layers of the Earth, improvement of our ability to discriminate nuclear explosions from earthquakes, interpretation of large-scale tectonics and reliable assessment of earthquake hazard. In this study, we first prepared the two-dimensional phase, group velocity images and also the shear wave velocity structure of the lithosphere and asthenosphere of the Alborz region. To achieve these goals, in the first step, we conducted a tomographic inversion of Rayleigh wave dispersion to obtain the two-dimensional (2-D) phase and group velocity tomographic images in a period range from 10 s to 100 s for the Alborz region. For this purpose, the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves, recorded along paths by broad-band stations, has been identified by applying the frequency time analysis (FTAN) to each epicenter–station path which, at the same time, satisfies the two-station method conditions. The fundamental modes, identified by FTAN, are used to determine the inter-station path average phase and group velocities at selected periods. With this procedure, group and phase velocity dispersion curves have been processed to obtain tomographic maps by applying the Yanovskaya–Ditmar formulation, for periods in the range between 10 and 100 s. Each tomographic map has been discretized with a grid of 0.5° of latitude per 0.5° of longitude. Our results demonstrated that the Alborz region is characterized by low crustal and uppermost-mantle group and phase velocities. Tomographic maps at high frequencies are well correlated with the upper crust structure and especially with sediment layer thicknesses. In the second step, we used fully non-linear inversion procedure, commonly known as hedgehog (Valyus et al., 1969; Valyus, 1972; Knopoff, 1972; Panza, 1981; Panza et al., 2007) to derive tomographic images of the elastic structure of the lithosphere and asthenosphere of the Alborz region. An estimated shear wave structure can be useful to estimate the strong ground motion as well as the realistic seismic hazard assessment. On the other hand, the derived tomographic phase, group images and the shear wave velocity structure are well correlated with major tectonic and geological features of the Alborz region. The Moho depth in this region is derived around 46 km in which the shear wave velocity varies between 3.7 and 4.3 km/sec when passing from the crust to the mantel. The thickness of the two resolved crustal layers are 15 and 25 km located beneath of a sediment layer with 6 km. In this region, three upper mantel layers are resolved with thicknesses of 20, 60 and 80 km having velocities of 4.3, 4.6 and 4.5 km/sec, respectively.

The basic point in geophysical studies is to obtain a model that can show structures below the ground surface. The basic step for this project is to obtain measurable parameters at the surface of the earth by physical laws. This object can be done by forward modeling. In geophysical investigations, the simplest model representing the earth is a one dimensional model which in the conductivity varies just with the variation of depth. In more realistic models of the earth, resistivity varies not only with depth, but also with one horizontal direction. Two dimensional forward modeling can be solved by analytical methods for some special cases. In two or three dimensional general cases, modeling performs by numerical methods. The numerical method in this case is the finite difference. When the results are extensive, this method is more useful, in comparison with the other calculative computer methods. Finite difference method does need much volume of CPU; also this method is suitable for running on some computers simultaneously because only the nearest adjacent points involve calculations. The main point in this method is the space size of the model blocks and the number of required frequencies. This will determine the duration of running time of the code.
Solving the problem of electromagnetic induction in the earth by numerical methods has been considered by many earth scientists for years. Various methods and techniques have been used in this field such as transmission line analogy, integral equation, finite element and finite difference. (Brewitt-Taylor and weaver,1976.) Jones and Pascoe are one of the first persons who have worked in this field. Jones and Pascoe’s articles in 1971 and 1972 further more than theoretical solution of electromagnetic induction, also included FORTRAN codes of electromagnetic induction solution by finite difference method for two dimensional structures in a layered earth. Nowadays researches in this field are focused on solution of electromagnetic induction in three dimensions. An economical and good formulation of this point in Integral vector equation method is presented by Raiche in 1974 and also the same method in more details is presented by Weidelt in 1975 separately.
Maxwell equations are needed for forward modeling of magnetotelluric data. The main equations which have been used in this research are curly differential Maxwell equations of electric and magnetic fields and the finite difference method is used for these equations. After setting the preconditions for having softer variations in electrical resistivity, a model for electrical resistivity has been gained in node points. By determination of final formulas of finite difference for all of the blocks of the net, the code for forward modeling in MATLAB is written. MATLAB code after obtaining the values of electric and magnetic fields for all points of the net, determines the electrical resistivity and phase of the points.
Eight matrices are the initial data for MATLAB code. These matrices introduce the model parameters. After making the model, MATLAB code makes the matrices of the system equations coefficients for obtaining the electric and magnetic fields values of the net. In conclusion, by calculating the electromagnetic field values, the values of the electrical resistivity and phase are gained for all points.
In this study, a forward modeling of TM mode magnetotelluric data is used. The MATLAB code is able to forward model the magnetotelluric data for various artificial two-dimensional models. Three models and their responses are presented. The code performs the forward modeling of various models perfectly.

Bouguer anomaly fields are often characterized by a broad, gently varying, regional anomaly on which local anomalies with shorter wavelengths may be superimposed. In gravity surveying, it is usually the local anomalies that are of prime interest and the first step of interpretation is to remove the regional field to isolate the residual anomalies. Several analytical methods of regional field analysis are available which include the trend surface analysis (fitting a surface to the observed data in geophysical surveys) and low-pass filtering. Because the regional changes have a large extent, the regional trend is mostly smooth and uniform. As a result, the trend surface analysis is a good method for identifying regional and residual anomalies. Trend surface analysis is a method for removing regional anomalies in geophysical surveying. In this method, the coordinates of the points are independent variables and the dependent variable is the measured value. Such procedures must be used critically as fictitious residual anomalies and sometimes arise when the regional field is subtracted from the observed data due to the employed mathematical procedures. In this paper a trend surface method is proposed that uses Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for the most desirable surface. PSO algorithm is based on the individual (i.e., particles or agents) behavior of a swarm. Its roots are in zoologist’s modeling of the movement of individuals (e.g., fishes, birds, or insects) within a group. It has been noticed that members within a group seem to share information among them, a fact that leads to increased efficiency of the group. The PSO algorithm searches in parallel, using a group of individuals similar to other. The main idea in this method is to model and simulate the movement and behavior of birds in food searching. Each particle in Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is one candidate for final result in problem's multidimensional space. The main advantages of the PSO algorithm are summarized as: simple concept, easy implementation, robustness to control parameters, and computational efficiency when compared with mathematical algorithm and other heuristic optimization techniques. The function that must be optimized is an equation for the nearest surface to the measured data as the objective function requires a standard length. For Description objective function need to standard lengths and norm is one of the length standards. The L1 norm is the best norm that can be used until gently resulting accurate. But in the methods used so far, L1 norm cannot be used because of employing derivatives in an optimization process. Procuring of the nearest result to the actual value of the regional anomalies is an advantage of this method. At first, this algorithm was coded in MATLAB software and then it was run on the gravity data measured during a gravity surveying around Neka and Ghaem Shahr cities in Mazandaran province. The results were compared by the least squares method and Geosoft software. The L2 norm is used in this method. Simulation results show a better convergence to the optimum surface of this algorithm rather than the least squares method. Providing the optimum surface with different norms and steps is another advantage of this algorithm.

Geophysical data inversion has a prominent role in geo-structural investigations. In this study, the corrected geophysical data of Doroh mining area were modeled to obtain the underground body's shape and other parameters such as susceptibility. At first, magnetic data were filtered and then modeled by the magnetic compact inversion method (Last & Kubik) and properties including depth, susceptibility and the deposit shape were provided. This inversion can be described according to basic principles to minimize the cross-sectional area of the sources. The under-surface area was divided into horizontal prisms with an extreme length and fixed magnetic susceptibility. The simulation was performed using synthetic magnetic anomalies generated by compact bodies embedded in an inducing magnetic field. It was shown that this modeling was capable of solving underdetermined problems with good accuracy in the presence of moderate noise data. At first, a MATLAB code was employed to implement the algorithm. The output results from the synthetic model demonstrated the accuracy of the code. The code was then applied to real magnetic data. The results showed acceptable accuracy. A statistical analysis was also carried out on the IP&Rs normalized data. Normalization was done because the statistical analysis was tender to data dispersion. Therefore, the outlier data was identitfied by a box plot of SPSS software and replaced using the Q method. Then the correlation coefficient was used to determine the dispersion extent. The statistical analysis showed a compact and rich body under the surveyed profiles. Then for providing more information on this area, apparent resistivity and induced polarization data were modeled by the RES2DINV software. RES2DINV is a computer program that automatically creates a two-dimensional resistivity model for the electrical data of the subsurface. In this software, the under-surface area is divided into horizontal prisms with an extreme length. In some situations, particularly where there are large resistivity variations near the ground surface, better results can be obtained by using narrower model cells. In almost all cases, this gives the optimum results. A forward modeling subroutine was used to calculate the apparent resistivity values, and a non-linear least-square optimization technique was used for the routine inversion. The program supports both finite-difference and finite-element forward modeling techniques. The studied area is located in Flysch zone in the Southeast of Doroh City in Sarbishe in the South Khorasan Province. Lithology of this area includes shale, sandstone and thin layer limestone, here and there. In this area, magnetic surveys were done via 40 profiles with a north eastern-south western strike and 1200 survey points. Apparent resistivity and induced polarization surveys were done in five profiles with a dipole-dipole array and 700 survey points. The magnetic consideration results showed three compact bodies under the surveyed profiles which were named A, B and C. The depths of these bodies were 80 – 100 meters. The results of IP & Rs modeling showed that these anomalies were located near the surface and are dyke-shaped. The results of magnetic compact inversion methods and modeling are in agreement with IP & Rs inversion results. For an exact review of this body, a few point were eventually proposed for drilling.

For an idealized fault, slip distributions are symmetrical about a central slip maximum and follow an elliptical distribution in an elastic material. However, slip distributions in nature are neither symmetric nor elliptical. The distribution of slip along a fault depends on its geometry and that of neighboring structures, the remote boundary conditions and boundary conditions along the fault(s), and the constitutive behavior of the surrounding host rock (Bürgmann et al., 1994). In fact, an interaction among the mentioned parameters determines the manner of the slip distribution on the fault(s). On the other hand, fault slip distributions play an important role in earthquake studies. Because faults are loaded at very slow rates in continental interiors, interactions among them and the resulting slip distribution can give rise to earthquakes on other faults after a long period of quiescence and seismicity can migrate from one fault to the other (Landgraf et al., 2009). The Alborz Mountains accommodate about one-third of the Arabian-Eurasian convergence (e.g., Priestley et al., 1994; Berberian and Yeats, 1999; Jackson et al., 2002). The Mosha-Fasham Fault, the Northern Tehran Thrust and the Taleghan Fault are active faults of the North of Tehran in Southern Central Alborz. It is necessary to analyze the seismic hazard in this area by considering the mechanical interaction among faults. In this research, a slip partitioning is done among the faults in the North of Tehran. First, an elastic and homogeneous half-space was considered for the study area. Then the geometric data of faults are gathered from geological and geophysical references including the fault length, width, dip, upper and lower locking depths. For Lame coefficients, we used average global values. Both mentioned geometrical and physical data were kept fixed in the modeling process. Then, a displacement gradient tensor that best fitted the study area is calculated using GPS data by least squares method. The strain-rate tensor and finally stress rate tensor were then estimated using the generalized Hook’s law. It is necessary to note that the orientation of the regional stress field (N36.5◦E) was kept fixed in modeling for all of the study area. The stress rate tensor acts as a boundary condition in the model. As another boundary condition, the faults were locked in a normal direction but they were allowed to slip freely in strike and dip directions under the influence of stress boundary conditions. Our problem involved a medium containing faults. Each fault had two surfaces or boundaries, one effectively coinciding with the other. A boundary element method called "the displacement discontinuity method" can cope with this problem. It is based on the analytical solution (Green function) to the problem of a constant discontinuity in a displacement over a finite line segment in a plane of a half-space elastic solid. Okada (1985) analytical solutions were used as Green functions for modeling. Regarding the strike and dip changes of the selected active faults, fault surfaces were divided into different segments in strike and dip directions with constant strike and dip. In this way, we had 22 fault segments in total. Then the fault segment surfaces were divided into 1×1 km elements. Finally, we had 8248 free slipping elements in strike and dip directions as input for modeling. In most cases, the results showed that the partitioned slips did not have an elliptical shape. Also, they were not symmetric around a central maximum. The modeling results showed that most of the faults in the study area were left-lateral strike slip and reverse dip slip faults. Also, the left-lateral strike slip rate magnitudes were often greater than the reverse dip slip ones. This was due to the obliquity of the horizontal principal stress axis relative to the fault strike, so that the along strike of the fault component of the principal stress was greater than the fault normal component.

In this research, moisture sources and their transport over Iran and its relation to other influencing factors during different months for lower (1000-700 mb), middle (700-500) and upper (500-300 mb) layers of the atmosphere were examined. Using the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) data of 0.5 degree horizontal resolution, described by Saha et al., 2010, several fields including the geopotential height, horizontal wind and temperature at several vertical levels along with the sea level pressure, precipitable water and rotational and divergent components of the moisture flux vector were presented and analyzed. Results for the lower layer showed that during December-April period, the rotational component of the vertically integrated moisture flux vector with cyclonic curvature over the Mediterranean Sea and the moisture transport over the North-west of Iran were observed. The anti-cyclonic curvature of the rotational component of the moisture flux vector over the West of the Indian Ocean and the East of Arabian Peninsula and formation of the synoptic systems over the East of the Mediterranean and their combination with the north-eastern African low-pressure synoptic system are responsible for the moisture transport over the West and South-west of Iran. Due to the Indian Ocean general circulation associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) during late May, the rotational component of the moisture flux vector over the Indian Ocean is anti-cyclonic, and hence the moisture transport from over the Arabian and Oman Seas into the Indian subcontinent and the south-east of Iran is observed. The results for the middle and upper layers showed that during the December-April period, the subtropical high is shifted towards lower latitudes over the South of Iran and consequently the Mediterranean low causes the moisture to be transported from the East of the Mediterranean over the North-west and west of Iran. During the warm season (June-August), the subtropical high is extended from the South-west to the North-east of Iran and causes moisture to be transported from the North of the Indian subcontinent to the East of Iran. Considering the divergent component of the moisture flux vector during December-April over the South of Indian Ocean, it is observed that the moisture flux vectors converge in the middle and lower layers and diverge in the upper layer. This means that in the lower and middle layers, the amount of evaporation is more than that of precipitation. The excess of evaporation in the lower and middle layers along with the vertical transport of moisture to the upper level causes the divergence of moist air in the upper layers. Over the north of the Indian Ocean, convergence of the moisture flux vector is observed in the upper layer and its divergence is observed in middle and lower layers. It means that there is a circulation of moist air at the meridional plane (45-70 E), between Oman Sea and the South of the Indian Ocean. Over the Indian subcontinent, there is a convergence of moisture flux vector at the lower and middle layers and divergence of moisture flux vector is observed at the upper layer. On the other hand, over the East of Iran, convergence of moisture flux vector is observed at the upper layer along with divergence in the middle and lower layers. It means that along with the summer time Indian monsoon intensification during June-August, there is a circulation of moist air at the zonal plane (25-35N) between the Indian subcontinent and the east of Iran.

The behavior of the oceans and the atmosphere in mid-latitudes may be considered as a small departure from the background rotation of the Earth as a solid body. This provides a ground for the quasigeostrophic (QG) approximation, which is obtained by a formal expansion of the primitive equations in Rossby number that measures the intensity of such departures from the background rotation. The resulting equations, though much simpler than the full set, are still complex enough that it is not always clear what they imply about the nature of their solutions. Therefore, further simplifications have been sought in particular contexts, looking for more tractable models. A model of this kind constructed based on the assumption of a uniform interior QG potential vorticity is discussed in this paper. A further simplification may be obtained by assuming uniform stratification in the atmosphere/ocean. This model has been proposed for explaining some aspects of instability in the atmosphere by Charney and Eady and is used in this paper for studying some effects of wind shear on baroclinic instability. In the Eady model, the wind shear on the lower (ground surface) and upper (tropopause surface) boundaries plays a determining role in the occurrence of instability. However, in the classic form of the baroclinic instability theory of Charney and Eady, wind shear is considered constant with height, and therefore the effect of variations in wind shear on the ground and tropopause surfaces are not covered. According to the Charney–Stern–Pedlosky theorem, with uniform interior potential vorticity, for instability to occur, the wind shear at the upper and lower boundaries must be of the same sign. This theorem provides the necessary condition for instability but gives no further information on the effect of the wind shear at the two boundaries. Then here, the objective is to assess the effects of the wind shear on Eady-like models, that is, models with uniform interior QG potential vorticity. After examining a quadratic vertical zonal wind profile for the basic state as a special case, the arbitrary variation of the wind shear at the two boundaries is studied in an Eady-like model. It is shown that for each wavenumber, there are upper and lower bounds, respectively denoted by and, for the ratio of the tropopause wind shear to the earth's surface wind shear , beyond which instability cannot occur. That is, for instability the ratio must be in the interval which serves as an additional necessary condition for instability. Considering all the wavenumbers, the lowest value for is found to be With nondimensional wavenumbers in whichandare respectively the dimensional wavelength and Rossby deformation radius, for , instability occurs provided that the wind shear at the lower boundary is greater than that at the upper boundary. For between 1 and 1.4, tends to infinity which means that for instability there is no restriction on the magnitude of the wind shear at the upper boundary.

Atmospheric visibility is an important parameter that can affect human activities as well as being a good indicator of the air pollution condition in urban areas. Hence its monitoring is important for urban such areas as Tehran which often suffer from acute air pollution episodes. Atmospheric visibility is closely related to the meteorological conditions determined by local and regional factors such as topography, latitude, closeness to water body, etc.
In this study, the atmospheric visibility for the years 2001-2011 at the Institute of Geophysics, Tehran, including the effects of meteorological conditions such as rain, fog and suspended dust on its variations were considered. The visibility and meteorological data were obtained from Meteorology Organization of Iran and the air pollution data are acquired from the air quality company of the municipalily of Tehran. In this ten-year period, the mean annual visibility of this city was about 8.7 km while the seasonal visibilities for spring, summer, autumn, and winter were 9.2, 9.7, 9.1, and 6.7 km, respectively. The largest visibility occured in August (9.9 km) while the least one occured in December (5.7 km). On the whole, the visibility was affected by rain, fog and dust from which dust was more effective in reducing the visibility especially in winters in which its frequent value was less than 3 km, and is less than the other periods. Also in the cold season, the average visibility for relative humidities less than 60 percent increased from 1 to 2 km. The average annual PM10 concentration for the years 2007-2009, for which the whole data were available, was 68.9 μg/m3, with its maximum for August and December.
The relationship between the visibilities and some other air pollution and meteorological factors were also considered. The largest negative correlation between the PM10 concentration and the visibility occured in spring and summer. This was due to the fact that the moisture content of air in this period was more than that of the rest of the year in this area. Moisture usually contributes to the formation of very fine urban aerosols and also makes larger aerosols known as haze.
City of Tehran is in the vicinity of a high mountain range that induces a very marked local circulation. This circulation is particularly marked in this area which is often away from active mid-latitude storm tracks leading to calm conditions. This study showed that as the daily wind turns from northerly katabatic to southerly anabatic during the morning transition, the visibility deteriorates due to the movement of the more polluted air over the station.
This study also showed that poor visibilities less than 3 km often occured with high concentrations of PM10 in calm conditions over the city in which urban aerosols dominate especially in winter, or when strong dusty winds prevail.

The outputs of General Circulation Models (GCMs) which are available for the users based on predefined scenarios have a low spatial resolution. Hence, downscaling techniques should be used for regional studies. Since climate is an effective factor in natural phenomena, a time series of future weather data is required for meteorological, agricultural and hydrological prediction or pre-warning applications. It is also important to select and utilize better and more accurate techniques for theses purposes. Generally, downscaling methods are classified into two categories: dynamical and statistical. The statistical downscaling is commonly considered due to its simplicity and wide applicability. As an example, LARS-WG is a parametric or semi-parametric model which has been used widely, but it underestimates monthly variances. Undoubtedly, it is more useful to use an approach having a non-parametric structure so that it does not rely on a statistical structure by default. These models use a set of observations in the simulation process not a certain value namely the "parameter". The aim of this study was to use a nonparametric approach for downscaling the GCM outputs. This approach is composed of one weather generator (WG) and a technique called strategic re-sampling which creates series that match the GCM output. The weather generator itself is based on a Kernel Density Estimator (KDE) and it is a multivariate weather generator. In the KDE method, all of the observations with a definite kernel function, commonly standardized and normalized, are used. Firstly, one of the normal kernels (with probability 1/n) is selected randomly and its mean is considered as the basic vector. Bandwidth (h) is the only parameter that should be estimated. The strategic re-sampling method includes a stochastic function based on the definition of the "shape parameter", which determines the tendency of the new series. At the first step, a strategic re-sampling is run and then strategic series are prepared as input to the WG and the simulating climate prospect. The study area is Karkheh Basin in Khuzestan Province, Southwest of Iran. Downscaling was done for two periods, 30 years (2011 to 2040) and 60 years (2011-2060) for monthly rainfall and air temperature variables based on the A1B scenario of the CGCM3T63 model. The results can be divided into three groups: an estimate of the strategic re-sampling parameter, evaluation of the weather generator applicability and finally, the climate change simulation. Results showed that in case of temperature, by selecting a unit value for the shape parameter, the generated series coincide with the observed or historical series. Substituting the values less or more than one resulted in warmer and colder simulated series, respectively. Similarly, for rainfall series the optimum value was 0.9. Accoring to the results, the ability of the WG in simulation of moments of different orders (mean, variance and skewness coefficient) was acceptable and the coefficients were cross validated. The applied GCM showed warmer and drier series for both study periods. The findings of the study revealed that future climate would be simulated accurately and non-significantly different from GCM outputs. In general, the suggested non-parametric approach can be recommend due to the following features: non existence of a default pattern in its structure, the least number of parameters for running, coincidence of the high accuracy in downscaling with the GCM outputs and simplicity. More case studies are recommended for further scrutiny. Keywords: GCMs, re-sampling, KDE, Karkheh basin, downscaling
